Accroding to an article in AV Watch Impress, Blood The Last Vampire Blu-ray, released on May 27, 2009, is using Imagica’s technology to rid of the phenomenon of “banding” effect which happens when the film is encoded in 8-bit from a higher bit rate. It happens particularly in anime and CG. Apparently HD-MAPS is a technique for putting subtle gradients and a little bit of grain in so that the lines between the bands don’t stand out as much. They don’t just put the whole thing in soft focus, it determines where the edges should be, somehow makes an “exception” for the characters, and only applies it to the background. It can also discriminate between colors, so it can, say, smooth out the gradation on a blue sky and leave the white clouds as is. It’s double-checked by humans as it goes.

Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone Blu-ray sold 49 thousand copies for its first week of sale (May 25 - 31). Not only did it reach #1 in the Blu-Ray rankings for 6/8, but it also set a record for the highest initial sales for a Blu-Ray Disc. The Dark Knight had been in the top spot with 29,000, and Final Fantasy VII Advent Children (which went on sale in April of this Year) had reached 27,000, but this disc outpaced those two by over 20,000.
